MPP Laurie Scott Announces Ontario Investing in Seniors Community Grants

BOBCAYGEON – MPP Laurie Scott announced today Ontario is investing $24,760 in two of the Bobcaygeon Senior Citizens Centre’s projects: Digital Learning for Seniors and Nutritious Meals on a Budget.

This is a part of the $7 million to protect seniors and older adults by supporting over 320 community projects that help them to stay fit, active, healthy and socially connected.

“This investment will help local seniors in Bobcaygeon and the surrounding area develop the digital skills they need to become more self-reliant and independent” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. “Additionally, the Nutritious Meals on a Budget initiative will help seniors deal with the rising costs of food while also bringing together our community.”

The Digital Learning for Seniors project aims to help seniors in the Kawartha Lakes to become more digitally confident. The program includes two phases. Phase one works with seniors in one-on-one sessions, helping them to get the most out of features on their phone or tablet. Phase two includes computer sessions to help make the seniors gain greater use of their home computer. These sessions lead up to showing how AI can be a great asset to seniors.

The Nutritious Meals on a Budget program aims to help single seniors (and others) regain the fun and social advantages of cooking (and taking home) quality meals without breaking the bank.

“I want to thank the Ontario Government for funding of our two initiatives, Digital Learning for Seniors and Eating Well. This funding and these programs will help seniors in our community become more digitally confident and also help single seniors (and others) regain the fun and social advantages of cooking while learning new nutrition information” said Sandi Jackson, Bobcaygeon Seniors Centre.

Seniors Community Grants projects are designed to increase independence, reduce social isolation and create positive connections.

“I am delighted to make this announcement. Our government is committed to protecting our seniors’ health and well-being and ensuring they have access to inclusive and reliable community supports,” said Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. “The Seniors Community Grant Program is a critical lifeline throughout the province for seniors to learn new skills, get fit, enjoy group activities and stay connected to their friends and neighbours.”

SCG recipients can receive up to $25,000 to support local programs, services and events to provide seniors with opportunities for greater social inclusion, volunteerism and community engagement. Today’s announcement highlights one of the many programs and services available to support the needs of seniors in Ontario.
