BGC Kawarthas Among Recipients of Additional Provincial After School Funding

BGC Kawarthas (formerly Boys & Girls Club of Kawartha Lakes) has received over $50,000 in additional provincial funding for its after school programs for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year to combat rising program delivery costs. The funding was part of a province wide announcement.

Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Neil Lumsden announced $1.1 million in additional funds will be for BGC Clubs across Ontario to aid in their after school programs. According to a release, “These additional funds,” said Lumsden, “will enable after school providers to continue serving high-priority neighbourhoods and tailor their programming to align with the needs of the local community.”

“This funding will help BGC Kawarthas in their mission to assist families in overcoming barriers and embracing new opportunities as they work diligently to ensure that children can thrive” said MPP Laurie Scott, Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. “Our government continues to be committed to ensuring children and youth have the resources and support they need to be active, healthy, and successful.”

BGC Kawarthas provides safe, high quality care to almost 600 children and youth after school in City of Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough. The after school funding supports its operations in Kirkfield, Mariposa, Coboconk, and in Lindsay where children are transported to, and from schools in club vehicles.

“Ontario’s After School Program is a very big part of why BGC Kawarthas is able to offer affordable options to families for after school care,” said Amy Terrill, Executive Director of BGC Kawarthas. “We look forward to continuing to provide young people with the life skills they need to reach their full potential.”

“Through Ontario’s After School Program, BGC Clubs can provide affordable and high-quality programming to over 4,700 children and youth across the province,” said Owen Charters, President & CEO of BGC Canada. “As Ontarians struggle with the rising cost of living, affordable after school care is a lifeline for parents. We look forward to continuing to partner with the Ministry on lowering costs for parents and expanding opportunities for children.”
